Community Action Project

This week the 5th graders received their CAP project information packets that contain expectations and due dates.  One of the due dates is for February 27th, the morning we leave for Yosemite.  I have asked the students to either hand in the paper early or the morning of departure as I’ll collect and put in our classroom.
The CAP projects are meant to be an introduction to volunteerism and the rewards associated with helping others.  The kids are encouraged to help in areas they feel passionate about, but should avoid the handling or processing of money.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Cyr.

The final months of school become a busy time for the children, parents please help them to stay organized and remind them to keep on top of their long term projects so they don’t fall behind.  I can’t express how impressed I am with the students who are volunteering their time to create the Digital Book Trailers.  These short clips are wonderful motivation to go out and find the book.  If you haven’t seen the book trailers, just hit the link in the upper right hand corner and select a book!  Animoto offers teachers 50 full usage licenses for 6 months, which means the kids can use the site from home to create movies from vacations and other events.

Almost Here!

A Mixture!

Time is almost up on the Science Projects!  Make sure to get your projects all sorted out and complete on your poster board.  Everyone here at school is super excited to hear how all your amazing research and work work produced an outcome.

Save the Date:  February 16th—Science Report Due here at Teach Elementary!

I’ve been wearing my hiking shoes and so should you!  I’m trying to break them in before the big field trip to Yosemite.  I must give Ms. Kelly a thousand thanks for suggesting I, “break them in before the trip!”  Wow, we leave 3 weeks from today, lets keep our fingers crossed for more snow.

Final draft essays are due this week (2/8/12) and that means we’ll be having another “Publishing Party!”  The date is still to be determined, rest assured you’ll be the first to ‘know the date.’  Thanks everyone for all your hard work on those essays.

Field Trip!

This morning Teach Elementary students enjoyed the performance at Cal Poly!

Students from 5th and 6th grades have been given the opportunity to work on Animoto at lunch, please see your teacher or Mr. Cyr if you’d like a permission slip to come join the Video Book Trailers at lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Students will need a permission slip in order to participate, and when they do they’ll get an all access pass to the full animoto site!  Click on the links in the upper right hand corner to see the videos we’ve already made.

Students are now working on Social Studies and Science Fair projects, please allow time each day to work on those projects or at least have a plan on when you’re going to complete them.

Open House Reports

This week the students will be given their 2nd term Social Studies projects to be completed just in time for Open House on March 21st.  The reports will have a built in scheduler so the students can write a paragraph letting me know where they are so they don’t fall behind.  Keep an eye on the Science projects too, that date is fast approaching.  Lastly, the kids and I have been talking about presenting oral reports on topics of their choosing.  Some students are wishing to write as well and I couldn’t be happier seeing so many students wanting to present a report to the whole class.   The outline for these reports will be coming home this week!  This is a busy time of year for the kids and I’d encourage everyone to eat healthy and gets lots of rest.

Go Teach!

Congratulations to all the students playing sports right now!  We’re hearing so many exciting stories about teams and players having either beaten the buzzer or scoring the game winning shot!  Keep up the great work everyone.

Check out our NEW Video Book Trailers by just clicking the link in the upper right hand corner.  If you’d like to come join us at lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays just get a permission slip from Mr. Cyr and you too can learn to make these awesome Video Book Trailers.  Come join the fun today, we hope you’ll join us!

Week of January 17th

Congratulations Minori for winning the Elks lodge essay writing contest!

Students should be working on their science fair projects gathering information in order to build their poster boards!  Remember to ask for help if you have any questions and please try to follow the format in your handouts as close as possible.

If there are any 6th grade families that would like to donate/sell their winter Yosemite clothes to the upcoming 5th graders please bring those items to Mr. Cyr’s classroom and we’ll work out an arrangement that works for everyone.  This week, Big 5 is having a big sale on snow clothing, boots and accessories.  Remember what Ms. Kelly said, “the key is to stay dry!”  Good luck everyone!

The Electives are truly shaping up to be a wonderful experience for all the students at school.  The activities include everything from computer programming to Hip Hop Dancing.  It’s awesome seeing the kids involved in such a variety of activities with students from the three grade levels.  Thank you parents for organizing and giving your time to help our student body.

Science Projects

Starting today after school there will be science help for those who still need support with their science projects!  The kids are super excited about testing and writing up their findings, hurry and get started today in order to make the deadline of February 16th.  This Friday will be the school’s Geography Bee and representing our classroom is Kit with Krissy as our runner-up, way to go!

This week the Elective classes start, make sure you ask your child how the fun-filled day went!  Thank you parents and other volunteers who have made this an exciting event here at Teach.

New Year 2012!

Welcome back to school in this new year 2012!  The kids are bringing home their science fair (February 16th) project boards so they can display their wonderful research projects.  Remember to get started early and don’t wait too long!  Everyone seemed thrilled and happy to be back at school and it was super nice seeing all the smiling faces and the awesome greetings.

A Week to Remember…

This is our last week before school is out for 2 weeks.  The year continues to progress very rapidly and I hope everyone takes a little time to rest and gear up for the second half of the year!  We’ll be celebrating the winter holidays this friday from 1:00-2:30 in and around our classroom, please feel free to stop in and  lend a hand with all the activities being planned.  There is a “White Elephant Party exchange of a $5 item during the celebration.  Please make sure the item is wrapped.  I hope everyone has an awesome break and I’ll see you all next year!  Mr. Cyr  jcyr@slcusd.org

The class Geography Bee winner is Kit Scriven and the runner-up was Krissy Krull.  Kit will represent room 24 in the school-wide competion and Krissy will be his back-up just in case he’s unable to attend.  Way to go everyone!

Two Weeks Until Break!

Students remember to keep working hard in all your classes and don’t lose too much focus before we leave for break!  This week we’re finding out who is class representative for the Teach Geography Bee.  I want to send out a special shout out to the entire class for having such a splendid performance during the awards assembly—Hooray, You Were Very Confident!  If a parent would like to volunteer to be our room parent for the class party next week can you please email me at jcyr@slcusd.org  Thank you all for all your hard work and dedication!

Welcome Back!

This week the kids will be celebrating those grades from term 1 and continuing those efforts in term 2.  Parents remember that it’s Tiger Pride Awards Assembly this Friday!  Both classes were super excited about being back in class today that I had to remind them of the awesome work ahead before we leave for Winter Vacation on December 16th!  Wow—it seems like yesterday it was the first day of school.
